Apple sets iPhone 8 event at new Steve Jobs theater
Apple sent out invites for its annual iPhone event this week, which will take place on September 12 at its new Cupertino HQ, at the Steve Jobs Theater it built there specifically to host special events. It’s expected that Apple will reveal a brand new iPhone with a nearly bezel-free design on the day. Apple is expected to showcase several new products, including the new iPhone, an updated Apple Watch, and even a new 4K-capable Apple TV.
Uber hires former Facebook exec and Firefox founder Blake Ross
Uber has hired Firefox co-founder Blake Ross to work with them on product strategy. “I’m joining Uber to help develop product strategy, rally the troops, and improve my passenger rating,” Ross wrote via a Facebook post. The news comes just two days after the company announced its new CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi. Uber is expected to make some new hires in the coming months to both improve its public image and to prepare for its eventual IPO.
Nest is announcing something big on Sept. 20
Nest, a division of Alphabet, famous for its Nest Learning Thermostat as well as home security cameras and a smart smoke detector, just sent invites to an event on September 20, promising a big announcement. It isn’t clear what Nest plans to reveal at its press conference, however, the invitation mentions popcorn and a couch, and tech sites have been speculating anything from a home theater to a smart microwave.
Facebook users raised $10M for Harvey victims
On Thursday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that people on the site have raised more than $10 million for people affected by Hurricane Harvey, the storm that’s devastated Texas. That figure includes the $1 million Facebook said it would match in donations for the storm. “As the hard work to rebuild continues, it’s inspiring to see people coming together to help others in need,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page.
