Why Apple Co-Founder Wozniak Thinks Tesla Will Create the Next Moonshot Technology

By Tian DuBelko

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak recently joined Bloomberg for an interview and gave his thoughts on the next potential tech breakthrough.

When the topic of the most promising moonshots in emerging technology came up, Wozniak said that he would “bet on Tesla” to create the next big breakthrough with their self-driving cars.

“We’ve got artificial intelligence in driving cars,” Wozniak said. “That’s probably the biggest moonshot because everyone knows it’s probably going to be very successful in changing our lives hugely.”

During the interview, Wozniak praised Tesla’s direction and fearlessness. “They’ve put an awful lot of effort into very risky things,” he said of Tesla’s pursuits of electric cars and self-driving cars.

In particular, Wozniak said that Elon Musk’s anticipation for efficient transportation systems is what will allow Tesla to create the next breakthrough technology.

“Everybody needs transportation in our human life,” Wozniak said.

Some proposed solutions to alleviate heavy traffic around big cities include boring holes underground or building a hyper tube to accelerate traffic without the need of planes.

Wozniak didn’t mention Apple when discussing who would be responsible for the next moonshot tech, but he may have implied a reason a bit later into his interview.

“Look at the companies like Google and Facebook and Apple and Microsoft that changed the world, Tesla included. They usually came from young people. They didn’t spring out of big businesses,” he explained.

And if Apple isn’t the one leading innovation, then maybe Tesla can pick up the slack.

“I’m going to bet on Tesla – so many of these off the wall different directions, and they start with a car.”
