The idea of futuristic tech companies taking over the world isn’t a new idea by any means, but it may be happening faster than we think. Science fiction novels predicted megacorps and futuristic tech companies dominating the world, but not already by the year 2017.
But according to Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends report, that’s exactly what’s happening. In short, tech companies dominate the rankings compared to just five years ago. The 355-page report covers all tech-related topics, including online commerce and doing business via the cloud.
A quick glance at the chart confirms the dominance of tech companies today. In descending order, the top five companies with the highest current market value are Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook. A list of global tech giants, to be sure. And if you include Chinese enterprises Tencent and Alibaba, tech companies make up 70 percent of the 10 most valuable companies, judging by market cap.

The rapidly-evolving nature of the tech industry is clear by comparing this year’s chart to that of five years ago. In 2012, only three tech companies, Apple, Microsoft, and IBM showed up in the top 10. Google was among the top 20, but neither Amazon or Facebook had made a splash. In fact, Facebook didn’t IPO until May 2012.
This report is proof that tech companies are becoming a dominant force in the world and are showing up more and more in our everyday lives, including sports. Tech giants such as Google and Amazon are constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation, and that unrelenting attitude towards progress can only be good for the long-term outlook of tech.
